Busy School-Day Eating

Your child's school lunches do need planning (that so-called "mystery meat"
doesn't seem to fall into any of the approved food groups.) But during the
busy school day, both you and your children need to eat for maximum energy
and success.

Breakfast: Leggo that Eggo!

No more skipping breakfast, or relying on high-sugar, high-fat kids' cereals
or pastries. It's proven that both you and your kids will be more alert if
you have nutritious food in the morning. Have a little breakfast with your
coffee. You might be surprised how much better you feel.

  • With citrus juicers, you can make a delicious, filling smoothie for those
fall days. Try the Banana Breakfast in our Recipes section.
  • If you need a warm, easy to prepare breakfast, try Hormone Cereal to help
    kids grow.
  • Crabapples are ripe in the fall and are a delicious alternative to
non-nutritious breakfast foods. For family fun during the school year,
visit a crabapple orchard and join your kids in the fun of picking
crabapples. It's a great time-out from your busy schedule. Then, try the
delicious crabapple recipes in our Recipe section.

Lunch:

Greasy school cafeterias and vending machines are not your child's only
alternative. You may think you don't have time to pack a lunch, but it's
easier than you think, and once your kids reach first grade, you can get
them involved.

  • Ask your kids what they would like, and help them choose what they want.
If they want pizza rolls or Pop-Tarts, don't argue, but suggest an apple as
    dessert.
  • Show kids what's in the refrigerator and make a game out of creating the
most imaginative food combos. You may be surprised.
  • Plan lunches a week in advance and set lunch food in its own separate place
    in the fridge.
  • Consider dehydrating fruits and vegetables so that they keep longer and you
can use them for several months. Take advantage of free shipping with all our dehydrators.

Dinner:

While McDonald's for lunch, or dinner, won't hurt your kids and may help
your budget, you can make several quick, tasty dinners, such as Holly's
Tacorritos
.
